A scientific revolution
in vision restoration.

A CLEAR OPPORTUNITY

The eye is an elegant biological machine, designed by evolution to capture patterns of light and relay them to the brain. Advances in genetics now enable us to reproduce essential components of that system, making it possible to restore sight for people living with vision loss that is caused by cells within the eye losing the ability to convert light to an electrical signal that the brain can interpret.

Our mission is to turn that possibility into a reality for patients.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

Our approach originated at the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) in Switzerland, where researchers Botond Roska, M.D., Ph.D., and Bence György, M.D., Ph.D., combined two cutting-edge technologies to create our platform: optogenetic proteins able to engineer photosensitivity into mammalian cells, and gene therapy tools designed to install that light-sensing machinery into target cell types in the human eye.

EXPERIENCED LEADERSHIP

The RhyGaze team has extensive experience in developing gene therapies for ophthalmology applications. Multiple members of our team were instrumental in the development, regulatory approval and commercialization of Luxturna in the treatment of RPE65 mutation-associated retinal dystrophy — the first gene therapy product to be approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for the treatment of a genetic disease — by Spark Therapeutics. RhyGaze is based in Basel, Switzerland and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
